Resize an image to 2048×2048 pixels

To resize an image to 2048×2048 px, enter 2048 × 2048 px and pick crop to fill so the 1:1 frame is not stretched: a 4:3 phone photo loses 25% of its area (a centred 3024×3024 crop). The result has 4.19 megapixels; as a JPEG, a detailed outdoor photo is about 1.3 MB at the panel's default quality 85 (1,009 KB at quality 75).

What 2048×2048 means in pixels

2048×2048 is a square, 2048 pixels on each side, 4,194,304 pixels in total (4.19 megapixels). Its sides reduce to 1:1 (1 as a decimal), so any picture cropped to 1:1 scales to it without distortion.

That is 34.4% of a 12 MP phone frame; after the crop to fill the phone picture is reduced by 0.677×, so fine detail such as hair and text survives. Shown 1:1 it fills 2048×2048 CSS px on a standard screen and 1024×1024 CSS px on a 2× (Retina-class) screen; at 72 DPI the same pixels span 28.4×28.4 inches.

Decoded for editing it occupies 16 MB of memory (4 bytes per pixel); uncompressed 24-bit RGB would be 12 MB, which is why the downloadable JPEG, PNG or WebP is far smaller.

Getting 2048×2048 from a phone, camera or screenshot

Filling 2048×2048 from a 12 MP phone photo (4032×3024, 4:3) loses the least (25%); a vertical phone video frame (1080×1920, 9:16) loses the most (43.8%). "Fit inside" keeps the whole picture instead and the file comes out at the size in the last column; "Pad with colour" adds bars to reach the full 2048×2048.

12 MP phone photo (4032×3024, 4:3) 3024×3024 (left and right cut) 25% 0.677× (reduced) 2048×1536
24 MP camera photo (6000×4000, 3:2) 4000×4000 (left and right cut) 33.3% 0.512× (reduced) 2048×1365

Vertical phone video frame (1080×1920, 9:16) 1080×1080 (top and bottom cut) 43.8% 1.896× (enlarged) 1152×2048

When 2048×2048 means enlarging

After the crop to fill, the kept region has to be enlarged 1.896× from a Full HD screenshot and 1.896× from a vertical phone video frame. Enlarging adds pixels but no detail, so start from the largest original you have, or choose a smaller target if the destination allows it: 2048×1536 (QXGA) or 2400×1600 landscape would need less stretching.

How many KB is a 2048×2048 image?

Estimated from encodes of real sample images measured with sharp 0.35.5 / libvips 8.18.7 on 31 October 2026, interpolated to 4,194,304 pixels. The outdoor photo at 2048×2048 is about 1,009 KB at quality 75 and a scanned page about 423 KB; your file will differ with detail and noise.

How to resize a picture to 2048×2048

  1. Add the picture

Drop, paste or pick the photo in the PixelFit panel at the top of this page; it is decoded in your browser and never uploaded.

  2. Set the size

Enter 2048 as the width and 2048 as the height in pixels (the panel is already set to 2048×2048).

  3. Choose how it fits

Choose crop to fill to keep the 1:1 frame without stretching (a phone photo loses 25%, left and right cut). Fit inside keeps the whole picture as a 2048×1536 file instead; Pad with colour puts that on a full 2048×2048 canvas.

  4. Pick the format and download

Choose JPG or WebP; without a KB limit PixelFit saves JPG at quality 85, about 1.3 MB for a detailed outdoor photo. Add a KB limit if the upload has one or the file should be smaller, then download the 2048x2048 file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I resize an image to 2048x2048?

Open the image in the PixelFit panel on this page, set 2048 × 2048 px, choose crop to fill so nothing is stretched and download. From a 12 MP phone photo that crops 25% (left and right cut) and scales the rest by 0.677×.

What aspect ratio is 2048x2048?

2048x2048 has an aspect ratio of 1:1: square, width ÷ height = 1. Sizes with the same ratio include 2000×2000 square, 1600×1600 square and 1500×1500 square.

Is 2048x2048 good for print?

At 300 DPI 2048x2048 prints 6.83×6.83 in (17.3×17.3 cm), enough for a print of that size at full density. At 150 DPI it stretches to 13.65×13.65 in.

How big is a 2048x2048 JPEG file?

For a detailed outdoor photo about 1,009 KB at quality 75 (769 KB at 60, 1.59 MB at 90, 1.3 MB at the panel's default quality 85); a head-and-shoulders portrait is about 336 KB at quality 75, estimated from measured encodes. A flat graphic is smaller, a noisy low-light photo larger.

How does 2048x2048 look on a high-density screen?

On a 2× screen 2048x2048 is sharp when shown at 1024×1024 CSS px; shown larger, the browser enlarges it. A slot of 2048×2048 CSS px on a 2× screen needs a 4096×4096 file.
