Resize an image to 1600×1600 pixels
To resize an image to 1600×1600 px, enter 1600 × 1600 px and pick crop to fill so the 1:1 frame is not stretched: a 4:3 phone photo loses 25% of its area (a centred 3024×3024 crop). The result has 2.56 megapixels; as a JPEG, a detailed outdoor photo is about 843 KB at the panel's default quality 85 (640 KB at quality 75).

What 1600×1600 means in pixels
1600×1600 is a square, 1600 pixels on each side, 2,560,000 pixels in total (2.56 megapixels). Its sides reduce to 1:1 (1 as a decimal), so any picture cropped to 1:1 scales to it without distortion.
That is 21% of a 12 MP phone frame; after the crop to fill the phone picture is reduced by 0.529×, so fine detail such as hair and text survives. Shown 1:1 it fills 1600×1600 CSS px on a standard screen and 800×800 CSS px on a 2× (Retina-class) screen; at 72 DPI the same pixels span 22.2×22.2 inches.
Decoded for editing it occupies 9.77 MB of memory (4 bytes per pixel); uncompressed 24-bit RGB would be 7.32 MB, which is why the downloadable JPEG, PNG or WebP is far smaller.
Getting 1600×1600 from a phone, camera or screenshot
Filling 1600×1600 from a 12 MP phone photo (4032×3024, 4:3) loses the least (25%); a vertical phone video frame (1080×1920, 9:16) loses the most (43.8%). "Fit inside" keeps the whole picture instead and the file comes out at the size in the last column; "Pad with colour" adds bars to reach the full 1600×1600.
| Starting image | Crop to fill keeps | Area lost | Scale | Fit inside gives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12 MP phone photo (4032×3024, 4:3) | 3024×3024 (left and right cut) | 25% | 0.529× (reduced) | 1600×1200 |
| 24 MP camera photo (6000×4000, 3:2) | 4000×4000 (left and right cut) | 33.3% | 0.4× (reduced) | 1600×1067 |
| Full HD screenshot (1920×1080, 16:9) | 1080×1080 (left and right cut) | 43.8% | 1.481× (enlarged) | 1600×900 |
| Vertical phone video frame (1080×1920, 9:16) | 1080×1080 (top and bottom cut) | 43.8% | 1.481× (enlarged) | 900×1600 |
When 1600×1600 means enlarging
After the crop to fill, the kept region has to be enlarged 1.481× from a Full HD screenshot and 1.481× from a vertical phone video frame. Enlarging adds pixels but no detail, so start from the largest original you have, or choose a smaller target if the destination allows it: 1200×1500 portrait or A6 (105×148 mm) would need less stretching.
How many KB is a 1600×1600 image?
Estimated from encodes of real sample images measured with sharp 0.35.5 / libvips 8.18.7 on 31 October 2026, interpolated to 2,560,000 pixels. The outdoor photo at 1600×1600 is about 640 KB at quality 75 and a scanned page about 286 KB; your file will differ with detail and noise.

How to resize a picture to 1600×1600
-
Add the picture
Drop, paste or pick the photo in the PixelFit panel at the top of this page; it is decoded in your browser and never uploaded.
-
Set the size
Enter 1600 as the width and 1600 as the height in pixels (the panel is already set to 1600×1600).
-
Choose how it fits
Choose crop to fill to keep the 1:1 frame without stretching (a phone photo loses 25%, left and right cut). Fit inside keeps the whole picture as a 1600×1200 file instead; Pad with colour puts that on a full 1600×1600 canvas.
-
Pick the format and download
Choose JPG or WebP; without a KB limit PixelFit saves JPG at quality 85, about 843 KB for a detailed outdoor photo. Add a KB limit if the upload has one or the file should be smaller, then download the 1600x1600 file.

Frequently asked questions
How do I resize an image to 1600x1600?
Open the image in the PixelFit panel on this page, set 1600 × 1600 px, choose crop to fill so nothing is stretched and download. From a 12 MP phone photo that crops 25% (left and right cut) and scales the rest by 0.529×.
What aspect ratio is 1600x1600?
1600x1600 has an aspect ratio of 1:1: square, width ÷ height = 1. Sizes with the same ratio include 1500×1500 square, 2000×2000 square and 2048×2048 square.
Is 1600x1600 good for print?
At 300 DPI 1600x1600 prints 5.33×5.33 in (13.5×13.5 cm), enough for a print of that size at full density. At 150 DPI it stretches to 10.67×10.67 in.
How big is a 1600x1600 JPEG file?
For a detailed outdoor photo about 640 KB at quality 75 (485 KB at 60, 1 MB at 90, 843 KB at the panel's default quality 85); a head-and-shoulders portrait is about 217 KB at quality 75, estimated from measured encodes. A flat graphic is smaller, a noisy low-light photo larger.
How does 1600x1600 look on a high-density screen?
On a 2× screen 1600x1600 is sharp when shown at 800×800 CSS px; shown larger, the browser enlarges it. A slot of 1600×1600 CSS px on a 2× screen needs a 3200×3200 file.
