Convert PNG to JPG free, without uploading

PNG to JPG shrank our 1281×1600 px portrait from 4.46 MB to 254 KB (−94%) at quality 85, but a flat chart stayed about the same (39.7 KB → 39.6 KB) and lost its crisp edges. Convert photos; keep screenshots, logos and signatures as PNG. Transparent areas turn white. Nothing is uploaded.

What changes from PNG to JPG

All 5 points below lose or alter something on the way from PNG to JPG.

  • Lost or changed: JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas of the PNG are filled with a background colour (white unless you pick another).
  • Lost or changed: Animated PNGs (APNG) are rare, but if yours is one, only its first frame becomes the JPG.
  • Lost or changed: JPG is lossy: the exact pixels of the PNG are approximated, which is invisible on photos at high quality but can blur sharp text and edges.
  • Lost or changed: PNG can hold more than 8 bits per channel (1 to 16 bits per channel); a browser canvas works at 8 bits, so 10-, 12- or 16-bit files are reduced to 8 bits per channel.
  • Lost or changed: Metadata is not carried over: the PNG's text chunks, eXIf and ICC data are dropped by the canvas.

What the numbers mean for PNG to JPG

Our portrait photo at 1281×1600 px: PNG 4.46 MB → JPG 254 KB (−94%, 18.0 times smaller).

Our landscape photo at 1600×1200 px: PNG 4.74 MB → JPG 640 KB (−87%, 7.6 times smaller).

Our scanned typed letter at 1273×1600 px: PNG 2.59 MB → JPG 331 KB (−88%, 8.0 times smaller).

Our flat chart with a transparent background at 1600×1000 px: PNG 39.7 KB → JPG 39.6 KB (−0.4%, about the same size).

Per pixel, the portrait took 18.27 bits as PNG and 1.01 bits as JPG, a difference of 4.22 MB on 2,049,600 pixels.

Per pixel, the chart took 0.20 bits as PNG and 0.20 bits as JPG, a difference of 0.15 KB on 1,600,000 pixels.

JPG came out smaller than PNG on all 4 samples, from −0.4% to −94%.

For graphics a 256-colour PNG beat the JPG: the chart was 12.5 KB as a palette PNG against 39.6 KB as a JPG, without blurred edges, so graphics are better kept as PNG.

How to convert PNG to JPG

  1. Add the PNG file

Drop the .png file on the tool at the top of this page, tap to choose it, or paste it.

  2. Pick a background

Choose the colour that fills transparent areas of the PNG in the JPG; white is pre-selected because most forms and documents are white.

  3. Keep JPG selected

JPG is pre-selected at quality 85. Type a maximum size in KB or exact pixel dimensions only if the destination sets them; PixelFit then searches the highest quality that fits and shrinks the pixel size only when quality alone is not enough. Our PNG test portrait came out at 254 KB as JPG with no limit set.

  4. Download the JPG

Save the file ending in .jpg; its size in KB shows before you save.

When not to change PNG to JPG

  • Avoid JPG for screenshots, text, signatures and logos when the destination accepts PNG: JPEG compression softens hard edges, and on our flat chart the PNG to JPG change saved only −0.4%.
  • If the transparent background of the PNG must stay (a logo over a coloured page, a sticker), keep the PNG or choose WebP instead of JPG.
  • If the destination already accepts PNG, upload the original: every change of format re-encodes the pixels.

Upload forms that ask for JPG

53 of the 61 application portals we checked accept JPG photos, 16 of them with a limit of 50 KB or less. A few of them, for this PNG file (verify with the official notice before you upload):

  • Rwanda visa: JPG photo, up to 500 KB.
  • UPSC: JPG photo, 20–300 KB, 350–1000 × 350–1000 px.
  • India Post GDS: JPG photo, up to 50 KB.
  • Kerala PSC: JPG photo, up to 30 KB, 150 × 200 px.

Where PNG files come from

PNG files are usually screenshots, exported graphics, scanned signatures or images with a transparent background. Photos saved as PNG are large because PNG keeps every pixel exactly.

Moving a PNG to JPG is mostly about accepted file types and file size.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert PNG to JPG for free?

Yes. The PNG to JPG change runs free on your device, with no sign-up and no upload, one file or up to 25 at a time; Pro raises the batch to 500 with one ZIP download.

How do I convert PNG to JPG?

Drop the PNG on the tool above, keep JPG selected, pick a background colour for transparent areas, and download the .jpg file. Add a KB limit if the destination has one.

Does converting PNG to JPG reduce quality?

JPG is lossy: the exact pixels of the PNG are approximated, which is invisible on photos at high quality but can blur sharp text and edges. In our test a 1281×1600 px portrait went from 4.46 MB as PNG to 254 KB as JPG (−94%).

Should I convert screenshots and logos from PNG to JPG?

Usually not. Our flat chart was 39.7 KB as a full-colour PNG and 39.6 KB as a quality 85 JPG, while a 256-colour PNG of it took 12.5 KB with sharp edges. For a smaller graphic keep PNG selected and type a KB limit: PixelFit cuts the colour count before it cuts pixels.

How small does a PNG photo get as JPG?

In our test the 1281×1600 px portrait went from 4.46 MB to 254 KB at JPG quality 85 and 160 KB at quality 70; the 1600×1200 px landscape went from 4.74 MB to 640 KB. With a KB limit set, PixelFit picks the highest quality that fits.

What happens to the transparent background of a PNG?

JPG has no transparency, so transparent pixels of the PNG are filled with the background colour you pick, white by default. Choose PNG or WebP to keep transparency.
