Convert AVIF to JPG free, without uploading

AVIF to JPG grew our 1281×1600 px test portrait from 58.9 KB to 206 KB (+250%). Transparent areas become white, or a colour you pick, because JPG has no transparency. Drop the AVIF (.avif) on the tool below and download the JPG; nothing is uploaded.

No file-size limit is set: PixelFit saves at high quality and changes only the format and any pixel size you set.

What changes from AVIF to JPG

All 5 points below lose or alter something on the way from AVIF to JPG.

  • Lost or changed: JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas of the AVIF are filled with a background colour (white unless you pick another).
  • Lost or changed: AVIF can be animated; PixelFit writes a still JPG of the first frame only.
  • Lost or changed: AVIF can be lossy or lossless and most AVIF files online are lossy, so saving one as JPG usually adds a second round of compression loss; keep quality high.
  • Lost or changed: AVIF can hold more than 8 bits per channel (8, 10 or 12 bits per channel); a browser canvas works at 8 bits, so 10-, 12- or 16-bit files are reduced to 8 bits per channel.
  • Lost or changed: Metadata is not carried over: the AVIF's EXIF and XMP items are dropped by the canvas, and EXIF orientation is applied to the pixels first so the photo stays upright.

Measured file size: AVIF vs JPG

sharp 0.35.5 / libvips 8.18.7, 31 October 2026, long edge 1600 px; JPG saved as quality 85, 4:2:0, white background, AVIF as quality 50, effort 4 (PixelFit reads AVIF but does not write it). The JPG column is the AVIF file decoded and saved again, as PixelFit does.

Per pixel, the portrait took 0.24 bits as AVIF and 0.82 bits as JPG, a difference of 147 KB on 2,049,600 pixels.

Per pixel, the chart took 0.03 bits as AVIF and 0.20 bits as JPG, a difference of 34.1 KB on 1,600,000 pixels.

JPG came out larger than AVIF on all 4 samples, by +134% to +603%.

For graphics a 256-colour PNG beat the JPG: the chart was 12.5 KB as a palette PNG against 39.8 KB as a JPG, without blurred edges, so an AVIF graphic may be better off as PNG.

How to convert AVIF to JPG

  1. Add the AVIF file

Drop the .avif file on the tool at the top of this page, tap to choose it, or paste it.

  2. Pick a background

Choose the colour that fills transparent areas of the AVIF in the JPG; white is pre-selected because most forms and documents are white.

  3. Keep JPG selected

JPG is pre-selected at quality 85. Type a maximum size in KB or exact pixel dimensions only if the destination sets them; PixelFit then searches the highest quality that fits and shrinks the pixel size only when quality alone is not enough. Our AVIF test portrait came out at 206 KB as JPG with no limit set.

  4. Download the JPG

Save the file ending in .jpg; its size in KB shows before you save.

When not to change AVIF to JPG

  • Do not change AVIF to JPG to make a photo smaller: our portrait grew +250%, from 58.9 KB to 206 KB, with no gain in quality.
  • If the transparent background of the AVIF must stay (a logo over a coloured page, a sticker), choose PNG or WebP instead of JPG.
  • If the destination already accepts AVIF, upload the original: every change of format re-encodes the pixels.

Browser support for AVIF and JPG (October 2026)

Reading AVIF (.avif): Chrome 85+, Edge 121+, Firefox 93+, Safari 16.4+. caniuse puts AVIF support at about 96.33% of browsers in use (data updated 29 October 2026).

Writing JPG from that AVIF: Chrome 50+, Edge 79+, Firefox 18+, Safari 11+ (MDN compatibility data for canvas.toBlob, checked 31 October 2026).

AVIF reached Safari later than Chrome and Firefox, so iPhones and Macs older than Safari 16.4 may not open it; current versions do.

Upload forms that ask for JPG

53 of the 61 application portals we checked accept JPG photos, 16 of them with a limit of 50 KB or less. A few of them, for this AVIF file (verify with the official notice before you upload):

  • Bangladesh Freelancer ID: JPG photo, up to 500 KB, 300 × 300 px (also takes PNG).
  • Rajasthan HC Stenographer: JPG photo, 10–25 KB.
  • Japan eVISA: JPG photo, up to 2 MB (also takes PNG, GIF, BMP, HEIC).
  • China visa: JPG photo, 40–120 KB, 354–420 × 472–560 px.

Where AVIF files come from

AVIF files mostly come from websites that serve the newest image format to modern browsers. Saving one gives you an .avif that many desktop apps and forms cannot open, so it is changed to JPG for reuse.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert AVIF to JPG for free?

Yes. The AVIF to JPG change runs free on your device, with no sign-up and no upload, one file or up to 25 at a time; Pro raises the batch to 500 with one ZIP download.

How do I convert AVIF to JPG?

Drop the AVIF on the tool above, keep JPG selected, pick a background colour for transparent areas, and download the .jpg file. Add a KB limit if the destination has one.

Does converting AVIF to JPG reduce quality?

AVIF can be lossy or lossless and most AVIF files online are lossy, so saving one as JPG usually adds a second round of compression loss; keep quality high. In our test a 1281×1600 px portrait went from 58.9 KB as AVIF to 206 KB as JPG (+250%).

Why convert AVIF to JPG?

JPG suits photos for upload forms, e-mail and the web; AVIF is a poor fit for older apps, photo editors and most upload forms, which do not open it.

What happens to the transparent background of an AVIF?

JPG has no transparency, so transparent pixels of the AVIF are filled with the background colour you pick, white by default. Choose PNG or WebP to keep transparency.
