What changes from SVG to JPG

All 5 points below lose or alter something on the way from SVG to JPG.

  • Lost or changed: SVG is vector art; JPG stores pixels, so the drawing is rasterised once at the pixel size you choose and stops scaling cleanly.
  • Lost or changed: JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas of the SVG are filled with a background colour (white unless you pick another).
  • Lost or changed: An SVG can be animated with CSS or SMIL; PixelFit draws a still JPG of the picture as it first appears.
  • Lost or changed: JPG is lossy: the rendered pixels are approximated, which is invisible on photos at high quality but can blur sharp text and edges.
  • Lost or changed: Metadata is not carried over: the SVG's XML title and metadata elements are dropped by the canvas.

What the numbers mean for SVG to JPG

Our flat chart with a transparent background at 1600×1000 px: SVG 0.87 KB → JPG 39.6 KB (+4,456%, 45.6 times larger).

For graphics a 256-colour PNG beat the JPG: the chart was 12.5 KB as a palette PNG against 39.6 KB as a JPG, without blurred edges, so an SVG graphic may be better off as PNG.

How to convert SVG to JPG

  1. Add the SVG file

Drop the .svg file on the tool at the top of this page, tap to choose it, or paste it.

  2. Set the pixel size

Type the width in pixels for the JPG (and a height if you need an exact box): the SVG is redrawn from its shapes at that size, so pick the largest size you will need. Without a size, PixelFit draws it at the width and height written in the file, enlarged to 1,024 pixels on the long edge when the file states something smaller.

  3. Pick a background

Choose the colour that fills transparent areas of the SVG in the JPG; white is pre-selected because most forms and documents are white.

  4. Keep JPG selected

JPG is pre-selected at quality 85. Type a maximum size in KB or exact pixel dimensions only if the destination sets them; PixelFit then searches the highest quality that fits and shrinks the pixel size only when quality alone is not enough.

  5. Download the JPG

Save the file ending in .jpg; its size in KB shows before you save.

When not to change SVG to JPG

  • Avoid JPG for screenshots, text, signatures and logos when the destination accepts PNG: JPEG compression softens hard edges; PNG keeps them sharp at a similar or smaller size: our flat chart was 39.7 KB as a full-colour PNG and 12.5 KB with 256 colours, against 39.6 KB as JPG.
  • If the transparent background of the SVG must stay (a logo over a coloured page, a sticker), choose PNG or WebP instead of JPG.
  • Keep the SVG for websites, print and anything resized later; make a JPG only for the app or form that needs pixels.

Browser support for SVG and JPG (October 2026)

Reading SVG (.svg): Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari (as an image). caniuse puts SVG support at about 97.48% of browsers in use (data updated 29 October 2026).

Upload forms that ask for JPG

53 of the 61 application portals we checked accept JPG photos, 16 of them with a limit of 50 KB or less. A few of them, for this SVG file (verify with the official notice before you upload):

  • GST registration: JPG photo, up to 100 KB.
  • Canada G5 sponsorship: JPG photo, up to 4 MB, 420 × 540 px (also takes PNG, PDF).
  • Singapore ABTC: JPG photo, up to 8 MB, 400 × 514 px (also takes HEIC, PNG).
  • UK visa: JPG photo, 50 KB–6 MB, 600 × 750 px.

Where SVG files come from

SVG is a vector format: shapes and paths described in XML, not pixels. Logos and icons are often delivered as SVG, but chat apps, social sites, office tools and forms want a pixel image such as JPG.

An SVG may state a width and height, but it can be drawn at any size, so the output width is your choice; for a crisp result pick at least the size it will be displayed at, or twice that for high-density screens.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert SVG to JPG for free?

Yes. The SVG to JPG change runs free on your device, with no sign-up and no upload, one file or up to 25 at a time; Pro raises the batch to 500 with one ZIP download.

How do I convert SVG to JPG?

Drop the SVG on the tool above, keep JPG selected, pick a background colour for transparent areas, set the pixel size, and download the .jpg file. Add a KB limit if the destination has one.

Does converting SVG to JPG reduce quality?

JPG is lossy: the rendered pixels are approximated, which is invisible on photos at high quality but can blur sharp text and edges. In our test a 1600×1000 px chart went from 0.87 KB as SVG to 39.6 KB as JPG.

Why convert SVG to JPG?

JPG suits photos for upload forms, e-mail and the web; SVG is a poor fit for forms, chat apps and social sites that only take pixel images.

What happens to the transparent background of an SVG?

JPG has no transparency, so transparent pixels of the SVG are filled with the background colour you pick, white by default. Choose PNG or WebP to keep transparency.
