Convert JPG to PNG free, without uploading
JPG to PNG makes the file lossless from here on, not sharper: our 1281×1600 px portrait grew from 254 KB to 3.28 MB (+1,224%). Convert when an editor, print shop or form demands PNG; with a KB limit, PixelFit reduces colours, then pixels, to fit. Nothing is uploaded.

PNG · no file-size limit · original pixel size
No file-size limit is set: PixelFit saves at high quality and changes only the format and any pixel size you set.

What changes from JPG to PNG
1 of these 2 points loses or alters something on the way from JPG to PNG; the rest carry over.
- Kept: PNG adds no compression loss of its own, but it cannot bring back detail the JPG compression already removed.
- Lost or changed: Metadata is not carried over: the JPG's EXIF, ICC and XMP data are dropped by the canvas, and EXIF orientation is applied to the pixels first so the photo stays upright.
Measured file size: JPG vs PNG
sharp 0.35.5 / libvips 8.18.7, 31 October 2026, long edge 1600 px; PNG saved as lossless, zlib level 6, RGBA, JPG as quality 85, 4:2:0, white background. The PNG column is the JPG file decoded and saved again, as PixelFit does.

What the numbers mean for JPG to PNG
Our portrait photo at 1281×1600 px: JPG 254 KB → PNG 3.28 MB (+1,224%, 13.2 times larger).
Our landscape photo at 1600×1200 px: JPG 640 KB → PNG 4.22 MB (+575%, 6.7 times larger).
Our scanned typed letter at 1273×1600 px: JPG 331 KB → PNG 2.02 MB (+524%, 6.2 times larger).
Our flat chart with a transparent background at 1600×1000 px: JPG 39.6 KB → PNG 143 KB (+261%, 3.6 times larger).
Per pixel, the portrait took 1.01 bits as JPG and 13.43 bits as PNG, a difference of 3.03 MB on 2,049,600 pixels.
Per pixel, the chart took 0.20 bits as JPG and 0.73 bits as PNG, a difference of 103 KB on 1,600,000 pixels.
PNG came out larger than JPG on all 4 samples, by +261% to +1,224%.
Reducing the portrait PNG to 256 colours brought it down to 782 KB (made from the original photo), still 3.1 times a quality 85 JPG, and a 256-colour palette can band smooth skin and sky tones.
How to convert JPG to PNG
-
Add the JPG file
Drop the .jpg, .jpeg, .jpe file on the tool at the top of this page, tap to choose it, or paste it.
-
Keep PNG selected
PNG is pre-selected and saved in full colour. Type a maximum size in KB only if the destination sets one; PixelFit then tries fewer colours (a palette PNG) and, if that is not enough, fewer pixels. Our JPG test portrait came out at 3.28 MB as PNG with no limit set.
-
Download the PNG
Save the file ending in .png; its size in KB shows before you save.

When not to change JPG to PNG
- Do not change JPG to PNG to make a photo smaller: our portrait grew +1,224%, from 254 KB to 3.28 MB, with no gain in quality.
- Changing JPG to PNG does not restore detail; do it only when the destination demands PNG or you will edit the image further.
- If the destination already accepts JPG, upload the original: every change of format re-encodes the pixels.
Browser support for JPG and PNG (October 2026)
Reading JPG (.jpg, .jpeg, .jpe): Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari (every current browser).
Writing PNG from that JPG: Chrome 50+, Edge 79+, Firefox 18+, Safari 11+ (MDN compatibility data for canvas.toBlob, checked 31 October 2026).
Very large JPG files: with no pixel size set, PixelFit keeps up to 16,777,216 pixels (16.7 megapixels, 4096 × 4096 worth) and scales bigger pictures down to that, because Safari on iPhone and iPad will not create a larger canvas. A 12-megapixel 4032 × 3024 photo keeps its full size.
Upload forms that ask for PNG
10 of the 61 application portals we checked accept PNG photos, 1 of them with a limit of 50 KB or less. A few of them, for this JPG file (verify with the official notice before you upload):
- Canada PR portal: PNG photo, up to 4 MB, 715–2000 × 1000–2800 px (also takes JPG).
- Singapore ICA: PNG photo, up to 8 MB, 400 × 514 px (also takes JPG, HEIC).
- ICSI student: PNG photo, 20–50 KB (also takes JPG, GIF, BMP, PDF).
- Indonesia e-Visa: PNG photo, up to 2 MB, 400 × 600 px (also takes JPG).
Where JPG files come from
JPEG is the format phone cameras, scanners and most upload forms use, so a JPG usually only needs changing when the destination asks for something else: a PDF for a document upload, a PNG for an editor or WebP for a faster web page. This page covers the PNG case.
The .jpg and .jpeg extensions are the same format; PixelFit reads both, plus .jpe and .jfif.

Frequently asked questions
Can I convert JPG to PNG for free?
Yes. The JPG to PNG change runs free on your device, with no sign-up and no upload, one file or up to 25 at a time; Pro raises the batch to 500 with one ZIP download.
How do I convert JPG to PNG?
Drop the JPG on the tool above, keep PNG selected, and download the .png file. Add a KB limit if the destination has one.
Does converting JPG to PNG reduce quality?
PNG adds no compression loss of its own, but it cannot bring back detail the JPG compression already removed. In our test a 1281×1600 px portrait went from 254 KB as JPG to 3.28 MB as PNG (+1,224%).
Will converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. PNG stores the decoded JPEG pixels exactly, compression artefacts included, so the picture looks the same while the file grows: 254 KB to 3.28 MB for our portrait, 331 KB to 2.02 MB for a scanned letter. JPEG artefacts even make flat graphics harder to store: our chart went from 39.6 KB as JPG to 143 KB as PNG, against 39.7 KB for a PNG made from the original drawing.
How do I make the PNG smaller?
Type a KB limit. PixelFit tries full colour first, then a palette PNG with fewer colours, then fewer pixels. Our portrait as a 256-colour PNG was 782 KB, still 3.1 times the 254 KB JPG, and few colours band skin and sky, so for photos the JPG is the better small file.
