Resize an image to 640×480 pixels (VGA)

To resize an image to 640×480 px, enter 640 × 480 px and pick crop to fill so the 4:3 frame is not stretched: a 4:3 phone photo already has this shape and is only scaled by 0.159×. The result has 0.31 megapixels; as a JPEG, a detailed outdoor photo is about 104 KB at the panel's default quality 85 (77.7 KB at quality 75).

What 640×480 means in pixels

640×480 is a landscape frame, 1.33 times as wide as it is tall, 307,200 pixels in total (0.31 megapixels). Its sides reduce to 4:3 (1.3333 as a decimal), so any picture cropped to 4:3 scales to it without distortion.

A 12 MP phone photo has 40 times as many pixels, so reaching 640×480 is a clean reduction with no invented detail. Shown 1:1 it fills 640×480 CSS px on a standard screen and 320×240 CSS px on a 2× (Retina-class) screen; at 72 DPI the same pixels span 8.9×6.7 inches.

Decoded for editing it occupies 1.17 MB of memory (4 bytes per pixel); uncompressed 24-bit RGB would be 900 KB, which is why the downloadable JPEG, PNG or WebP is far smaller.

Getting 640×480 from a phone, camera or screenshot

Filling 640×480 from a 12 MP phone photo (4032×3024, 4:3) loses nothing; a vertical phone video frame (1080×1920, 9:16) loses the most (57.8%). "Fit inside" keeps the whole picture instead and the file comes out at the size in the last column; "Pad with colour" adds bars to reach the full 640×480. From the phone photo PixelFit takes the 4032×3024 crop through 2016×1512 and 1008×756 before the last step to 640×480, so each pass blends neighbouring pixels instead of skipping them.

How to resize a picture to 640×480

  1. Add the picture

Drop, paste or pick the photo in the PixelFit panel at the top of this page; it is decoded in your browser and never uploaded.

  2. Set the size

Enter 640 as the width and 480 as the height in pixels (the panel is already set to 640×480).

  3. Choose how it fits

Choose crop to fill: a 4:3 phone photo already matches, so nothing is cut.

  4. Pick the format and download

Choose JPG or WebP; without a KB limit PixelFit saves JPG at quality 85, about 104 KB for a detailed outdoor photo. Add a KB limit if the upload has one or the file should be smaller, then download the 640x480 file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I resize an image to 640x480?
