Resize an image to 1280×720 pixels (HD)
To resize an image to 1280×720 px, enter 1280 × 720 px and pick crop to fill so the 16:9 frame is not stretched: a 4:3 phone photo loses 25% of its area (a centred 4032×2268 crop). The result has 0.92 megapixels; as a JPEG, a detailed outdoor photo is about 311 KB at the panel's default quality 85 (235 KB at quality 75).

What 1280×720 means in pixels
1280×720 is a landscape frame, 1.78 times as wide as it is tall, 921,600 pixels in total (0.92 megapixels). Its sides reduce to 16:9 (1.7778 as a decimal), so any picture cropped to 16:9 scales to it without distortion.
A 12 MP phone photo has 13 times as many pixels, so reaching 1280×720 is a clean reduction with no invented detail. Shown 1:1 it fills 1280×720 CSS px on a standard screen and 640×360 CSS px on a 2× (Retina-class) screen; at 72 DPI the same pixels span 17.8×10 inches.
Decoded for editing it occupies 3.52 MB of memory (4 bytes per pixel); uncompressed 24-bit RGB would be 2.64 MB, which is why the downloadable JPEG, PNG or WebP is far smaller.

Getting 1280×720 from a phone, camera or screenshot
Filling 1280×720 from a Full HD screenshot (1920×1080, 16:9) loses nothing; a vertical phone video frame (1080×1920, 9:16) loses the most (68.3%). "Fit inside" keeps the whole picture instead and the file comes out at the size in the last column; "Pad with colour" adds bars to reach the full 1280×720. From the phone photo PixelFit takes the 4032×2268 crop through 2016×1134 before the last step to 1280×720, so each pass blends neighbouring pixels instead of skipping them.
| Starting image | Crop to fill keeps | Area lost | Scale | Fit inside gives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12 MP phone photo (4032×3024, 4:3) | 4032×2268 (top and bottom cut) | 25% | 0.317× (reduced) | 960×720 |
| 24 MP camera photo (6000×4000, 3:2) | 6000×3375 (top and bottom cut) | 15.6% | 0.213× (reduced) | 1080×720 |
| Full HD screenshot (1920×1080, 16:9) | 1920×1080 (nothing cut) | 0% | 0.667× (reduced) | 1280×720 |
| Vertical phone video frame (1080×1920, 9:16) | 1080×608 (top and bottom cut) | 68.3% | 1.185× (enlarged) | 405×720 |
When 1280×720 means enlarging
After the crop to fill, the kept region has to be enlarged 1.185× from a vertical phone video frame. Enlarging adds pixels but no detail, so start from the largest original you have, or choose a smaller target if the destination allows it: 1200×630 link preview image or 1080×566 landscape would need less stretching.
How many KB is a 1280×720 image?
Estimated from encodes of real sample images measured with sharp 0.35.5 / libvips 8.18.7 on 31 October 2026, interpolated to 921,600 pixels. The outdoor photo at 1280×720 is about 235 KB at quality 75 and a scanned page about 129 KB; your file will differ with detail and noise.

How to resize a picture to 1280×720
-
Add the picture
Drop, paste or pick the photo in the PixelFit panel at the top of this page; it is decoded in your browser and never uploaded.
-
Set the size
Enter 1280 as the width and 720 as the height in pixels (the panel is already set to 1280×720).
-
Choose how it fits
Choose crop to fill to keep the 16:9 frame without stretching (a phone photo loses 25%, top and bottom cut). Fit inside keeps the whole picture as a 960×720 file instead; Pad with colour puts that on a full 1280×720 canvas.
-
Pick the format and download
Choose JPG or WebP; without a KB limit PixelFit saves JPG at quality 85, about 311 KB for a detailed outdoor photo. Add a KB limit if the upload has one or the file should be smaller, then download the 1280x720 file.

Frequently asked questions
How do I resize an image to 1280x720?
Open the image in the PixelFit panel on this page, set 1280 × 720 px, choose crop to fill so nothing is stretched and download. From a 12 MP phone photo that crops 25% (top and bottom cut) and scales the rest by 0.317×.
What aspect ratio is 1280x720?
1280x720 has an aspect ratio of 16:9: landscape, width ÷ height = 1.7778. Sizes with the same ratio include 1200×675 landscape, 1600×900 (HD+) and 960×540 (qHD).
Is 1280x720 good for print?
At 300 DPI 1280x720 prints 4.27×2.4 in (10.8×6.1 cm), enough for a print of that size at full density. At 150 DPI it stretches to 8.53×4.8 in.
How big is a 1280x720 JPEG file?
For a detailed outdoor photo about 235 KB at quality 75 (177 KB at 60, 378 KB at 90, 311 KB at the panel's default quality 85); a head-and-shoulders portrait is about 93.4 KB at quality 75, estimated from measured encodes. A flat graphic is smaller, a noisy low-light photo larger.
How does 1280x720 look on a high-density screen?
On a 2× screen 1280x720 is sharp when shown at 640×360 CSS px; shown larger, the browser enlarges it. A slot of 1280×720 CSS px on a 2× screen needs a 2560×1440 file.
