Resize an image to 1280×1024 pixels (SXGA)

To resize an image to 1280×1024 px, enter 1280 × 1024 px and pick crop to fill so the 5:4 frame is not stretched: a 4:3 phone photo loses 6.3% of its area (a centred 3780×3024 crop). The result has 1.31 megapixels; as a JPEG, a detailed outdoor photo is about 443 KB at the panel's default quality 85 (336 KB at quality 75).

What 1280×1024 means in pixels

1280×1024 is a landscape frame, 1.25 times as wide as it is tall, 1,310,720 pixels in total (1.31 megapixels). Its sides reduce to 5:4 (1.25 as a decimal), so any picture cropped to 5:4 scales to it without distortion.

A 12 MP phone photo has 9.3 times as many pixels, so reaching 1280×1024 is a clean reduction with no invented detail. Shown 1:1 it fills 1280×1024 CSS px on a standard screen and 640×512 CSS px on a 2× (Retina-class) screen; at 72 DPI the same pixels span 17.8×14.2 inches.

Decoded for editing it occupies 5 MB of memory (4 bytes per pixel); uncompressed 24-bit RGB would be 3.75 MB, which is why the downloadable JPEG, PNG or WebP is far smaller.

Getting 1280×1024 from a phone, camera or screenshot

Filling 1280×1024 from a 12 MP phone photo (4032×3024, 4:3) loses the least (6.3%); a vertical phone video frame (1080×1920, 9:16) loses the most (55%). "Fit inside" keeps the whole picture instead and the file comes out at the size in the last column; "Pad with colour" adds bars to reach the full 1280×1024. From the phone photo PixelFit takes the 3780×3024 crop through 1890×1512 before the last step to 1280×1024, so each pass blends neighbouring pixels instead of skipping them.

Starting imageCrop to fill keepsArea lostScaleFit inside gives
12 MP phone photo (4032×3024, 4:3) 3780×3024 (left and right cut) 6.3% 0.339× (reduced) 1280×960
24 MP camera photo (6000×4000, 3:2) 5000×4000 (left and right cut) 16.7% 0.256× (reduced) 1280×853
Full HD screenshot (1920×1080, 16:9) 1350×1080 (left and right cut) 29.7% 0.948× (reduced) 1280×720
Vertical phone video frame (1080×1920, 9:16) 1080×864 (top and bottom cut) 55% 1.185× (enlarged) 576×1024

When 1280×1024 means enlarging

After the crop to fill, the kept region has to be enlarged 1.185× from a vertical phone video frame. Enlarging adds pixels but no detail, so start from the largest original you have, or choose a smaller target if the destination allows it: 1280×960 landscape or 1200×900 landscape would need less stretching.

How many KB is a 1280×1024 image?

Estimated from encodes of real sample images measured with sharp 0.35.5 / libvips 8.18.7 on 31 October 2026, interpolated to 1,310,720 pixels. The outdoor photo at 1280×1024 is about 336 KB at quality 75 and a scanned page about 171 KB; your file will differ with detail and noise.

How to resize a picture to 1280×1024

  1. Add the picture

Drop, paste or pick the photo in the PixelFit panel at the top of this page; it is decoded in your browser and never uploaded.

  2. Set the size

Enter 1280 as the width and 1024 as the height in pixels (the panel is already set to 1280×1024).

  3. Choose how it fits

Choose crop to fill to keep the 5:4 frame without stretching (a phone photo loses 6.3%, left and right cut). Fit inside keeps the whole picture as a 1280×960 file instead; Pad with colour puts that on a full 1280×1024 canvas.

  4. Pick the format and download

Choose JPG or WebP; without a KB limit PixelFit saves JPG at quality 85, about 443 KB for a detailed outdoor photo. Add a KB limit if the upload has one or the file should be smaller, then download the 1280x1024 file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I resize an image to 1280x1024?

Open the image in the PixelFit panel on this page, set 1280 × 1024 px, choose crop to fill so nothing is stretched and download. From a 12 MP phone photo that crops 6.3% (left and right cut) and scales the rest by 0.339×.

What aspect ratio is 1280x1024?

1280x1024 has an aspect ratio of 5:4: landscape, width ÷ height = 1.25. No other common target has exactly this ratio; the closest familiar shape is 5:4.

Is 1280x1024 good for print?

At 300 DPI 1280x1024 prints 4.27×3.41 in (10.8×8.7 cm), enough for a print of that size at full density. At 150 DPI it stretches to 8.53×6.83 in.

How big is a 1280x1024 JPEG file?

For a detailed outdoor photo about 336 KB at quality 75 (253 KB at 60, 537 KB at 90, 443 KB at the panel's default quality 85); a head-and-shoulders portrait is about 124 KB at quality 75, estimated from measured encodes. A flat graphic is smaller, a noisy low-light photo larger.

How does 1280x1024 look on a high-density screen?

On a 2× screen 1280x1024 is sharp when shown at 640×512 CSS px; shown larger, the browser enlarges it. A slot of 1280×1024 CSS px on a 2× screen needs a 2560×2048 file.
