Resize an image to 1200×1200 pixels

To resize an image to 1200×1200 px, enter 1200 × 1200 px and pick crop to fill so the 1:1 frame is not stretched: a 4:3 phone photo loses 25% of its area (a centred 3024×3024 crop). The result has 1.44 megapixels; as a JPEG, a detailed outdoor photo is about 485 KB at the panel's default quality 85 (368 KB at quality 75).

What 1200×1200 means in pixels

1200×1200 is a square, 1200 pixels on each side, 1,440,000 pixels in total (1.44 megapixels). Its sides reduce to 1:1 (1 as a decimal), so any picture cropped to 1:1 scales to it without distortion.

A 12 MP phone photo has 8.5 times as many pixels, so reaching 1200×1200 is a clean reduction with no invented detail. Shown 1:1 it fills 1200×1200 CSS px on a standard screen and 600×600 CSS px on a 2× (Retina-class) screen; at 72 DPI the same pixels span 16.7×16.7 inches.

Decoded for editing it occupies 5.49 MB of memory (4 bytes per pixel); uncompressed 24-bit RGB would be 4.12 MB, which is why the downloadable JPEG, PNG or WebP is far smaller.

Getting 1200×1200 from a phone, camera or screenshot

Filling 1200×1200 from a 12 MP phone photo (4032×3024, 4:3) loses the least (25%); a vertical phone video frame (1080×1920, 9:16) loses the most (43.8%). "Fit inside" keeps the whole picture instead and the file comes out at the size in the last column; "Pad with colour" adds bars to reach the full 1200×1200. From the phone photo PixelFit takes the 3024×3024 crop through 1512×1512 before the last step to 1200×1200, so each pass blends neighbouring pixels instead of skipping them.

Starting imageCrop to fill keepsArea lostScaleFit inside gives
12 MP phone photo (4032×3024, 4:3) 3024×3024 (left and right cut) 25% 0.397× (reduced) 1200×900
24 MP camera photo (6000×4000, 3:2) 4000×4000 (left and right cut) 33.3% 0.3× (reduced) 1200×800
Full HD screenshot (1920×1080, 16:9) 1080×1080 (left and right cut) 43.8% 1.111× (enlarged) 1200×675
Vertical phone video frame (1080×1920, 9:16) 1080×1080 (top and bottom cut) 43.8% 1.111× (enlarged) 675×1200

When 1200×1200 means enlarging

After the crop to fill, the kept region has to be enlarged 1.111× from a Full HD screenshot and 1.111× from a vertical phone video frame. Enlarging adds pixels but no detail, so start from the largest original you have, or choose a smaller target if the destination allows it: 1280×1024 (SXGA) would need less stretching.

How many KB is a 1200×1200 image?

Estimated from encodes of real sample images measured with sharp 0.35.5 / libvips 8.18.7 on 31 October 2026, interpolated to 1,440,000 pixels. The outdoor photo at 1200×1200 is about 368 KB at quality 75 and a scanned page about 183 KB; your file will differ with detail and noise.

How to resize a picture to 1200×1200

  1. Add the picture

Drop, paste or pick the photo in the PixelFit panel at the top of this page; it is decoded in your browser and never uploaded.

  2. Set the size

Enter 1200 as the width and 1200 as the height in pixels (the panel is already set to 1200×1200).

  3. Choose how it fits

Choose crop to fill to keep the 1:1 frame without stretching (a phone photo loses 25%, left and right cut). Fit inside keeps the whole picture as a 1200×900 file instead; Pad with colour puts that on a full 1200×1200 canvas.

  4. Pick the format and download

Choose JPG or WebP; without a KB limit PixelFit saves JPG at quality 85, about 485 KB for a detailed outdoor photo. Add a KB limit if the upload has one or the file should be smaller, then download the 1200x1200 file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I resize an image to 1200x1200?

Open the image in the PixelFit panel on this page, set 1200 × 1200 px, choose crop to fill so nothing is stretched and download. From a 12 MP phone photo that crops 25% (left and right cut) and scales the rest by 0.397×.

What aspect ratio is 1200x1200?

1200x1200 has an aspect ratio of 1:1: square, width ÷ height = 1. Sizes with the same ratio include 1080×1080 square, 1024×1024 square and 1000×1000 square.

Is 1200x1200 good for print?

At 300 DPI 1200x1200 prints 4×4 in (10.2×10.2 cm), enough for a print of that size at full density. At 150 DPI it stretches to 8×8 in.

How big is a 1200x1200 JPEG file?

For a detailed outdoor photo about 368 KB at quality 75 (277 KB at 60, 588 KB at 90, 485 KB at the panel's default quality 85); a head-and-shoulders portrait is about 134 KB at quality 75, estimated from measured encodes. A flat graphic is smaller, a noisy low-light photo larger.

How does 1200x1200 look on a high-density screen?

On a 2× screen 1200x1200 is sharp when shown at 600×600 CSS px; shown larger, the browser enlarges it. A slot of 1200×1200 CSS px on a 2× screen needs a 2400×2400 file.
