Resize an image to 512×512 pixels

To resize an image to 512×512 px, enter 512 × 512 px and save it as PNG. Shown at 512 CSS px it is sharp on a 1× screen; a 2× screen needs 1024×1024 px for the same spot. Cropping a 4:3 photo to fill the 1:1 square removes 25%.

What 512×512 means in pixels

512×512 is a square, 512 pixels on each side, 262,144 pixels in total (0.26 megapixels). Its sides reduce to 1:1 (1 as a decimal), so any picture cropped to 1:1 scales to it without distortion.

A 12 MP phone photo has 47 times as many pixels, so reaching 512×512 is a clean reduction with no invented detail. On a 2× (high-density) screen this file is sharp at 256 CSS px, on a 3× phone at 171 CSS px; a print at 300 DPI would be only 43.3 mm wide, so it is a screen-only size.

Decoded for editing it occupies 1 MB of memory (4 bytes per pixel); uncompressed 24-bit RGB would be 768 KB, which is why the downloadable JPEG, PNG or WebP is far smaller.

Where 512×512 is used

Each line comes from the page listed under Sources, checked October 2026. Platform sizes change, so check the source before you rely on it.

  • Web app manifest icon: Chromium needs at least a 192×192 and a 512×512 icon.

Getting 512×512 from a phone, camera or screenshot

Filling 512×512 from a 12 MP phone photo (4032×3024, 4:3) loses the least (25%); a vertical phone video frame (1080×1920, 9:16) loses the most (43.8%). "Fit inside" keeps the whole picture instead and the file comes out at the size in the last column; "Pad with colour" adds bars to reach the full 512×512. From the phone photo PixelFit takes the 3024×3024 crop through 1512×1512 and 756×756 before the last step to 512×512, so each pass blends neighbouring pixels instead of skipping them.

512×512 on high-density screens

A screen with a device pixel ratio of 2 draws every CSS pixel with 2×2 device pixels, so an icon shown at 512 CSS px needs a file of 1024×1024 there. Read the other way, this file is the 2× version of a 256×256 slot.

Shrinking a master icon to 512×512

Icons are best drawn large and reduced. PixelFit halves the master while both sides stay at or above 512 px, then makes one last step to 512×512; each pass blends neighbouring pixels, which keeps thin strokes from breaking up.

Making a 512×512 icon

512×512 is the largest icon Chromium requires in a web app manifest (larger sizes are allowed), so draw or export it from vector art and derive the smaller icons from it. Save icons as PNG to keep transparency and crisp edges; a flat graphic at 512×512 is about 26 KB as PNG, against 66.3 KB for a detailed outdoor photo as JPEG at quality 75.

A 512×512 icon is 11 times the 48 px edge that Google Search recommends exceeding for favicons, so it can double as the high-resolution favicon.

Other 1:1 sizes

These targets share the exact 1:1 ratio of 512×512, so resizing between them is a pure scale with nothing cropped.

How to resize a picture to 512×512

  1. Add the picture

Drop, paste or pick the photo in the PixelFit panel at the top of this page; it is decoded in your browser and never uploaded.

  2. Set the size

Enter 512 as the width and 512 as the height in pixels (the panel is already set to 512×512).

  3. Choose how it fits

Choose crop to fill to keep the 1:1 frame without stretching (a phone photo loses 25%, left and right cut). Fit inside keeps the whole picture as a 512×384 file instead; Pad with colour puts that on a full 512×512 canvas.

  4. Pick the format and download

Choose PNG for an icon, then download the 512x512 file.
