Resize an image to 180×180 pixels
To resize an image to 180×180 px, enter 180 × 180 px and save it as PNG. Shown at 180 CSS px it is sharp on a 1× screen; a 2× screen needs 360×360 px for the same spot. Cropping a 4:3 photo to fill the 1:1 square removes 25%.

What 180×180 means in pixels
180×180 is a square, 180 pixels on each side, 32,400 pixels in total (0.0324 megapixels). Its sides reduce to 1:1 (1 as a decimal), so any picture cropped to 1:1 scales to it without distortion.
It is thumbnail scale: a 12 MP phone photo carries 376 times more pixels, so the resize discards most of them and the stepped downscale matters for sharpness. On a 2× (high-density) screen this file is sharp at 90 CSS px, on a 3× phone at 60 CSS px; a print at 300 DPI would be only 15.2 mm wide, so it is a screen-only size.
Decoded for editing it occupies 127 KB of memory (4 bytes per pixel); uncompressed 24-bit RGB would be 94.9 KB, which is why the downloadable JPEG, PNG or WebP is far smaller.

Getting 180×180 from a phone, camera or screenshot
Filling 180×180 from a 12 MP phone photo (4032×3024, 4:3) loses the least (25%); a vertical phone video frame (1080×1920, 9:16) loses the most (43.8%). "Fit inside" keeps the whole picture instead and the file comes out at the size in the last column; "Pad with colour" adds bars to reach the full 180×180. From the phone photo PixelFit takes the 3024×3024 crop through 1512×1512, 756×756, 378×378 and 189×189 before the last step to 180×180, so each pass blends neighbouring pixels instead of skipping them.
| Starting image | Crop to fill keeps | Area lost | Scale | Fit inside gives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12 MP phone photo (4032×3024, 4:3) | 3024×3024 (left and right cut) | 25% | 0.06× (reduced) | 180×135 |
| 24 MP camera photo (6000×4000, 3:2) | 4000×4000 (left and right cut) | 33.3% | 0.045× (reduced) | 180×120 |

| Vertical phone video frame (1080×1920, 9:16) | 1080×1080 (top and bottom cut) | 43.8% | 0.167× (reduced) | 101×180 |
How many KB is a 180×180 image?
Estimated from encodes of real sample images measured with sharp 0.35.5 / libvips 8.18.7 on 31 October 2026, interpolated to 32,400 pixels. The outdoor photo at 180×180 is about 8.7 KB at quality 75 and a scanned page about 5.7 KB; your file will differ with detail and noise.

180×180 on high-density screens
A screen with a device pixel ratio of 2 draws every CSS pixel with 2×2 device pixels, so an icon shown at 180 CSS px needs a file of 360×360 there.
| Device pixel ratio | 180×180 is sharp up to | File needed for a 180 CSS px slot |
|---|---|---|
| 1× | 180×180 CSS px | 180×180 px |
| 1.5× | 120×120 CSS px | 270×270 px |
| 2× | 90×90 CSS px | 360×360 px |
| 3× | 60×60 CSS px | 540×540 px |
| 4× | 45×45 CSS px | 720×720 px |
Shrinking a master icon to 180×180
Icons are best drawn large and reduced. PixelFit halves the master while both sides stay at or above 180 px, then makes one last step to 180×180; each pass blends neighbouring pixels, which keeps thin strokes from breaking up.
| Master | Reduction | Passes PixelFit runs |
|---|---|---|
| 1024×1024 | 0.18× (5.7 times smaller) | 3: 512×512 → 256×256 → 180×180 |
| 512×512 | 0.35× (2.8 times smaller) | 2: 256×256 → 180×180 |
| 256×256 | 0.7× (1.4 times smaller) | 1: 180×180 |
Making a 180×180 icon
From a 512×512 master icon the reduction is 0.35×, small enough that the artwork usually survives without redrawing. Save icons as PNG to keep transparency and crisp edges; a flat graphic at 180×180 is about 7.3 KB as PNG, against 8.7 KB for a detailed outdoor photo as JPEG at quality 75.
A 180×180 icon is 3.8 times the 48 px edge that Google Search recommends exceeding for favicons, so it can double as the high-resolution favicon.
Other 1:1 sizes
These targets share the exact 1:1 ratio of 180×180, so resizing between them is a pure scale with nothing cropped.

How to resize a picture to 180×180
-
Add the picture
Drop, paste or pick the photo in the PixelFit panel at the top of this page; it is decoded in your browser and never uploaded.
-
Set the size
Enter 180 as the width and 180 as the height in pixels (the panel is already set to 180×180).
-
Choose how it fits
Choose crop to fill to keep the 1:1 frame without stretching (a phone photo loses 25%, left and right cut). Fit inside keeps the whole picture as a 180×135 file instead; Pad with colour puts that on a full 180×180 canvas.
-
Pick the format and download
Choose PNG for an icon, then download the 180x180 file.

Frequently asked questions
How do I resize an image to 180x180?
Open the image in the PixelFit panel on this page, set 180 × 180 px, choose crop to fill so nothing is stretched and download. From a 12 MP phone photo that crops 25% (left and right cut) and scales the rest by 0.06×.
What aspect ratio is 180x180?
180x180 has an aspect ratio of 1:1: square, width ÷ height = 1. Sizes with the same ratio include 192×192 PWA icon, 167×167 touch icon and 200×200 minimum share image.
Which other icon sizes go with 180x180?
For a 180 CSS px slot, a 2× screen needs 360×360 and a 3× phone 540×540. 180x180 is already above the 48×48 px that Google Search recommends exceeding for favicons.
How big is a 180x180 JPEG file?
For a detailed outdoor photo about 8.7 KB at quality 75 (6.6 KB at 60, 14.2 KB at 90, 11.6 KB at the panel's default quality 85); a head-and-shoulders portrait is about 7.8 KB at quality 75, estimated from measured encodes. A flat graphic is smaller, a noisy low-light photo larger.
