Resize an image to 128×128 pixels

To resize an image to 128×128 px, enter 128 × 128 px and save it as PNG. Shown at 128 CSS px it is sharp on a 1× screen; a 2× screen needs 256×256 px for the same spot. Cropping a 4:3 photo to fill the 1:1 square removes 25%.

What 128×128 means in pixels

128×128 is a square, 128 pixels on each side, 16,384 pixels in total (0.0164 megapixels). Its sides reduce to 1:1 (1 as a decimal), so any picture cropped to 1:1 scales to it without distortion.

It is thumbnail scale: a 12 MP phone photo carries 744 times more pixels, so the resize discards most of them and the stepped downscale matters for sharpness. On a 2× (high-density) screen this file is sharp at 64 CSS px, on a 3× phone at 43 CSS px; a print at 300 DPI would be only 10.8 mm wide, so it is a screen-only size.

Decoded for editing it occupies 64 KB of memory (4 bytes per pixel); uncompressed 24-bit RGB would be 48 KB, which is why the downloadable JPEG, PNG or WebP is far smaller.

Getting 128×128 from a phone, camera or screenshot

Filling 128×128 from a 12 MP phone photo (4032×3024, 4:3) loses the least (25%); a vertical phone video frame (1080×1920, 9:16) loses the most (43.8%). "Fit inside" keeps the whole picture instead and the file comes out at the size in the last column; "Pad with colour" adds bars to reach the full 128×128. From the phone photo PixelFit takes the 3024×3024 crop through 1512×1512, 756×756, 378×378 and 189×189 before the last step to 128×128, so each pass blends neighbouring pixels instead of skipping them.

How many KB is a 128×128 image?

Estimated from encodes of real sample images measured with sharp 0.35.5 / libvips 8.18.7 on 31 October 2026, interpolated to 16,384 pixels. The outdoor photo at 128×128 is about 4.9 KB at quality 75 and a scanned page about 2.9 KB; your file will differ with detail and noise.

128×128 on high-density screens

A screen with a device pixel ratio of 2 draws every CSS pixel with 2×2 device pixels, so an icon shown at 128 CSS px needs a file of 256×256 there. Read the other way, this file is the 2× version of a 64×64 slot.

Shrinking a master icon to 128×128

Icons are best drawn large and reduced. PixelFit halves the master while both sides stay at or above 128 px, then makes one last step to 128×128; each pass blends neighbouring pixels, which keeps thin strokes from breaking up.

MasterReductionPasses PixelFit runs
1024×1024 0.13× (8 times smaller) 3: 512×512 → 256×256 → 128×128
512×512 0.25× (4 times smaller) 2: 256×256 → 128×128
256×256 0.5× (2 times smaller) 1: 128×128

Making a 128×128 icon

From a 512×512 master icon the reduction is 0.25×, small enough that the artwork usually survives without redrawing. Save icons as PNG to keep transparency and crisp edges; a flat graphic at 128×128 is about 4.8 KB as PNG, against 4.9 KB for a detailed outdoor photo as JPEG at quality 75.

A 128×128 icon is 2.7 times the 48 px edge that Google Search recommends exceeding for favicons, so it can double as the high-resolution favicon.

These targets share the exact 1:1 ratio of 128×128, so resizing between them is a pure scale with nothing cropped.

How to resize a picture to 128×128

  1. Add the picture

Drop, paste or pick the photo in the PixelFit panel at the top of this page; it is decoded in your browser and never uploaded.

  2. Set the size

Enter 128 as the width and 128 as the height in pixels (the panel is already set to 128×128).

  3. Choose how it fits

Choose crop to fill to keep the 1:1 frame without stretching (a phone photo loses 25%, left and right cut). Fit inside keeps the whole picture as a 128×96 file instead; Pad with colour puts that on a full 128×128 canvas.

  4. Pick the format and download

Choose PNG for an icon, then download the 128x128 file.
