Updated · how we check
Convert WebP to PNG free, without uploading
WebP to PNG keeps transparency and every decoded pixel, but the file grows: our portrait went from 141 KB to 2.55 MB, our transparent chart from 14.1 KB to 120 KB. Use it when an editor or form needs PNG; for photos, JPG stays far smaller. Nothing is uploaded.

PNG · no file-size limit · original pixel size
No file-size limit is set: PixelFit saves at high quality and changes only the format and any pixel size you set.

The result appears here: the exact byte count, pixel size and quality, the size before and after, a preview and a download button.

What changes from WebP to PNG
2 of these 4 points lose or alter something on the way from WebP to PNG; the rest carry over.
- Kept: Transparency survives: PNG keeps the alpha channel of the WebP.
- Lost or changed: WebP can be animated; PixelFit writes a still PNG of the first frame only.
- Kept: PNG adds no compression loss of its own, but it cannot bring back detail the WebP compression already removed.
- Lost or changed: Metadata is not carried over: the WebP's EXIF, XMP and ICC chunks are dropped by the canvas, and EXIF orientation is applied to the pixels first so the photo stays upright.
Measured file size: WebP vs PNG
sharp 0.35.5 / libvips 8.18.7, 31 October 2026, long edge 1600 px; PNG saved as lossless, zlib level 6, RGBA, WebP as quality 85, alpha kept. The PNG column is the WebP file decoded and saved again, as PixelFit does.

What the numbers mean for WebP to PNG
Our portrait photo at 1281×1600 px: WebP 141 KB → PNG 2.55 MB (+1,749%, 18.5 times larger).
Our landscape photo at 1600×1200 px: WebP 587 KB → PNG 3.89 MB (+580%, 6.8 times larger).
Our scanned typed letter at 1273×1600 px: WebP 199 KB → PNG 1.3 MB (+570%, 6.7 times larger).
Our flat chart with a transparent background at 1600×1000 px: WebP 14.1 KB → PNG 120 KB (+754%, 8.5 times larger).
Per pixel, the portrait took 0.56 bits as WebP and 10.42 bits as PNG, a difference of 2.41 MB on 2,049,600 pixels.
Per pixel, the chart took 0.07 bits as WebP and 0.62 bits as PNG, a difference of 106 KB on 1,600,000 pixels.
PNG came out larger than WebP on all 4 samples, by +570% to +1,749%.
Reducing the portrait PNG to 256 colours brought it down to 782 KB (made from the original photo), still 3.1 times a quality 85 JPG, and a 256-colour palette can band smooth skin and sky tones.
How to convert WebP to PNG
-
Add the WebP file
Drop the .webp file on the tool at the top of this page, tap to choose it, or paste it.
-
Keep PNG selected
PNG is pre-selected and saved in full colour. Type a maximum size in KB only if the destination sets one; PixelFit then tries fewer colours (a palette PNG) and, if that is not enough, fewer pixels. Our WebP test portrait came out at 2.55 MB as PNG with no limit set.
-
Download the PNG
Save the file ending in .png; its size in KB shows before you save.

When not to change WebP to PNG
- Do not change WebP to PNG to make a photo smaller: our portrait grew +1,749%, from 141 KB to 2.55 MB, with no gain in quality.
- If you need the animation, keep the WebP: PixelFit writes a single still PNG frame.
- Changing WebP to PNG does not restore detail; do it only when the destination demands PNG or you will edit the image further.
Browser support for WebP and PNG (October 2026)
Reading WebP (.webp): Chrome 32+, Edge 18+, Firefox 65+, Safari 16+ (Safari 14-15 only on macOS 11 or later). caniuse puts WebP support at about 97.08% of browsers in use (data updated 29 October 2026).
Writing PNG from that WebP: Chrome 50+, Edge 79+, Firefox 18+, Safari 11+ (MDN compatibility data for canvas.toBlob, checked 31 October 2026).
WebP reached Safari later than Chrome and Firefox, so iPhones and Macs older than Safari 16 may not open it; current versions do.
Upload forms that ask for PNG
10 of the 61 application portals we checked accept PNG photos, 1 of them with a limit of 50 KB or less. A few of them, for this WebP file (verify with the official notice before you upload):
- Canada PR portal: PNG photo, up to 4 MB, 715–2000 × 1000–2800 px (also takes JPG).
- Singapore ICA: PNG photo, up to 8 MB, 400 × 514 px (also takes JPG, HEIC).
- ICSI student: PNG photo, 20–50 KB (also takes JPG, GIF, BMP, PDF).
- Indonesia e-Visa: PNG photo, up to 2 MB, 400 × 600 px (also takes JPG).
Where WebP files come from
WebP is what many websites serve, so images saved from a browser often arrive as .webp. Older photo editors, office documents and many upload forms still do not take it, which is the usual reason to change it to PNG.

Frequently asked questions
Can I convert WebP to PNG for free?
Yes. The WebP to PNG change runs free on your device, with no sign-up and no upload, one file or up to 25 at a time; Pro raises the batch to 500 with one ZIP download.
How do I convert WebP to PNG?
Drop the WebP on the tool above, keep PNG selected, and download the .png file. Add a KB limit if the destination has one.
Does converting WebP to PNG reduce quality?
PNG adds no compression loss of its own, but it cannot bring back detail the WebP compression already removed. In our test a 1281×1600 px portrait went from 141 KB as WebP to 2.55 MB as PNG (+1,749%).
Does WebP to PNG keep the transparent background?
Yes. PixelFit draws the WebP on a transparent canvas and PNG keeps the alpha channel, so a sticker or logo stays cut out. Only the JPG and PDF outputs fill transparent areas with a colour.
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the WebP?
A lossy WebP decodes into millions of slightly varied pixel values, and PNG stores every one of them exactly: 141 KB → 2.55 MB for our portrait (+1,749%), 14.1 KB → 120 KB for the chart. A KB limit makes PixelFit cut colours and then pixels; the same WebP saved as JPG instead was 227 KB.
Will an animated WebP stay animated?
No. PixelFit writes a still PNG of the first frame; animated output is not offered.
