Convert JFIF to PNG free, without uploading

JFIF to PNG grew our 1281×1600 px test portrait from 254 KB to 3.28 MB (+1,224%). PNG is lossless, so nothing more is lost. Drop the JFIF (.jfif) on the tool below and download the PNG; nothing is uploaded.

PNG · no file-size limit · original pixel size

No file-size limit is set: PixelFit saves at high quality and changes only the format and any pixel size you set.

The result appears here: the exact byte count, pixel size and quality, the size before and after, a preview and a download button.

What changes from JFIF to PNG

1 of these 2 points loses or alters something on the way from JFIF to PNG; the rest carry over.

  • Kept: PNG adds no compression loss of its own, but it cannot bring back detail the JFIF compression already removed.
  • Lost or changed: Metadata is not carried over: the JFIF's JFIF density header and any EXIF data are dropped by the canvas, and EXIF orientation is applied to the pixels first so the photo stays upright.

File size: JFIF to PNG measures like JPG to PNG

A .jfif file holds JPEG data, so it measures exactly like a .jpg: our 1281×1600 px portrait was 254 KB as JFIF and 3.28 MB as PNG (+1,224%), the same numbers as the JPG to PNG page lists for all 4 samples.

PNG stores the decoded JPEG pixels without loss, which is why the PNG is 13.2 times the size of the .jfif and no sharper.

How to convert JFIF to PNG

  1. Add the JFIF file

Drop the .jfif file on the tool at the top of this page, tap to choose it, or paste it.

  2. Keep PNG selected

PNG is pre-selected and saved in full colour. Type a maximum size in KB only if the destination sets one; PixelFit then tries fewer colours (a palette PNG) and, if that is not enough, fewer pixels. Our JFIF test portrait came out at 3.28 MB as PNG with no limit set.

  3. Download the PNG

Save the file ending in .png; its size in KB shows before you save.

JFIF, JPG and PNG: what really differs

Inside a .jfif file JPEG-compressed pixels with a JFIF APP0 header (ITU-T T.871)
Inside a .jpg file the same JPEG data, usually with an EXIF APP1 header written by the camera
Why the file says .jfif Windows can map the image/jpeg type to the .jfif extension, and browsers that ask Windows save downloads that way
What the PNG changes the decoded JPEG pixels stored losslessly, several times larger than the .jfif
PNG opens in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari (every current browser)
PNG good for screenshots, logos, signatures on white and images with transparency
PNG specification Portable Network Graphics (PNG) Specification, Third Edition (W3C)

When not to change JFIF to PNG

  • Do not change JFIF to PNG to make a photo smaller: our portrait grew +1,224%, from 254 KB to 3.28 MB, with no gain in quality.
  • Changing JFIF to PNG does not restore detail; do it only when the destination demands PNG or you will edit the image further.
  • If the destination already accepts JFIF, upload the original: every change of format re-encodes the pixels.

Browser support for JFIF and PNG (October 2026)

Reading JFIF (.jfif): Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari (it is ordinary JPEG data).

Writing PNG from that JFIF: Chrome 50+, Edge 79+, Firefox 18+, Safari 11+ (MDN compatibility data for canvas.toBlob, checked 31 October 2026).

Upload forms that ask for PNG

10 of the 61 application portals we checked accept PNG photos, 1 of them with a limit of 50 KB or less. A few of them, for this JFIF file (verify with the official notice before you upload):

  • Oman eVisa: PNG photo, up to 512 KB (also takes JPG, PDF).
  • Singapore ABTC: PNG photo, up to 8 MB, 400 × 514 px (also takes JPG, HEIC).
  • Indonesia e-VOA: PNG photo, up to 200 KB (also takes JPG).
  • Canada G5 sponsorship: PNG photo, up to 4 MB, 420 × 540 px (also takes JPG, PDF).

Where JFIF files come from

A .jfif file is ordinary JPEG data with a less common extension. Windows and some browsers save downloaded JPEGs this way, and upload forms that list only .jpg and .jpeg then refuse the file even though the picture inside is fine.

Converting it to PNG decodes that JPEG data once and writes a new PNG file.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert JFIF to PNG for free?

Yes. The JFIF to PNG change runs free on your device, with no sign-up and no upload, one file or up to 25 at a time; Pro raises the batch to 500 with one ZIP download.

How do I convert JFIF to PNG?

Drop the JFIF on the tool above, keep PNG selected, and download the .png file. Add a KB limit if the destination has one.

Does converting JFIF to PNG reduce quality?

PNG adds no compression loss of its own, but it cannot bring back detail the JFIF compression already removed. In our test a 1281×1600 px portrait went from 254 KB as JFIF to 3.28 MB as PNG (+1,224%).

Why convert JFIF to PNG?

PNG suits screenshots, logos, signatures on white and images with transparency; JFIF is a poor fit for upload forms whose file picker only lists .jpg and .jpeg.
