Resize an image to 2160×3840 pixels

To resize an image to 2160×3840 px, enter 2160 × 3840 px and pick crop to fill so the 9:16 frame is not stretched: a 4:3 phone photo loses 57.8% of its area (a centred 1701×3024 crop). The result has 8.29 megapixels; as a JPEG, a detailed outdoor photo is about 2.38 MB at the panel's default quality 85 (1.8 MB at quality 75, extrapolated).

What 2160×3840 means in pixels

2160×3840 is a portrait frame, 1.78 times as tall as it is wide, 8,294,400 pixels in total (8.29 megapixels). Its sides reduce to 9:16 (0.5625 as a decimal), so any picture cropped to 9:16 scales to it without distortion.

After the crop to fill a 12 MP phone photo (4032×3024) must be enlarged 1.27× to reach 2160×3840: no new detail appears, edges only get softer. Shown 1:1 it fills 2160×3840 CSS px on a standard screen and 1080×1920 CSS px on a 2× (Retina-class) screen; at 72 DPI the same pixels span 30×53.3 inches.

Decoded for editing it occupies 31.6 MB of memory (4 bytes per pixel); uncompressed 24-bit RGB would be 23.7 MB, which is why the downloadable JPEG, PNG or WebP is far smaller.

Getting 2160×3840 from a phone, camera or screenshot

Filling 2160×3840 from a vertical phone video frame (1080×1920, 9:16) loses nothing; a Full HD screenshot (1920×1080, 16:9) loses the most (68.3%). "Fit inside" keeps the whole picture instead and the file comes out at the size in the last column; "Pad with colour" adds bars to reach the full 2160×3840.

When 2160×3840 means enlarging

After the crop to fill, the kept region has to be enlarged 1.27× from a 12 MP phone photo, 3.553× from a Full HD screenshot and 2× from a vertical phone video frame. Enlarging adds pixels but no detail, so start from the largest original you have, or choose a smaller target if the destination allows it: 8×10 inch print or A5 (148×210 mm) would need less stretching.

How many KB is a 2160×3840 image?

Estimated from encodes of real sample images measured with sharp 0.35.5 / libvips 8.18.7 on 31 October 2026, interpolated to 8,294,400 pixels; this size lies outside the measured range, so the figures are extrapolated. The outdoor photo at 2160×3840 is about 1.8 MB at quality 75 and a scanned page about 732 KB; your file will differ with detail and noise.

How to resize a picture to 2160×3840

  1. Add the picture

Drop, paste or pick the photo in the PixelFit panel at the top of this page; it is decoded in your browser and never uploaded.

  2. Set the size

Enter 2160 as the width and 3840 as the height in pixels (the panel is already set to 2160×3840).

  3. Choose how it fits

Choose crop to fill to keep the 9:16 frame without stretching (a phone photo loses 57.8%, left and right cut). Fit inside keeps the whole picture as a 2160×1620 file instead; Pad with colour puts that on a full 2160×3840 canvas.

  4. Pick the format and download

Choose JPG or WebP; without a KB limit PixelFit saves JPG at quality 85, about 2.38 MB for a detailed outdoor photo. Add a KB limit if the upload has one or the file should be smaller, then download the 2160x3840 file.
