Resize a photo to 5×7 in (1500×2100 pixels)

A 5×7 in print at 300 DPI is 1500×2100 pixels. Set 5×7 in and 300 DPI in the panel and choose crop to fill: a 4:3 phone photo loses 46.4% and still gives 432 pixels per inch. As a JPEG, a detailed outdoor photo comes to about 1 MB at the panel's default quality 85 and 778 KB at quality 75.

How 5×7 in turns into pixels

An inch is exactly 25.4 mm, so at 300 DPI the pixel size is 5 in × 300 = 1500 px wide and 7 in × 300 = 2100 px tall. 5×7 in is a portrait shape with sides in the ratio 5:7 (0.7143 as a decimal), 127×177.8 mm in the other unit.

The same 5×7 in needs 1000×1400 px at 200 DPI and 3000×4200 px (12.6 MP) at 600 DPI. PixelFit writes the DPI you set into the JPEG header (the JFIF density field), so print software that reads it knows the file is meant to come out at 5×7 in.

Is your photo sharp enough for 5×7 in?

After the crop to fill, this is how many source pixels land on each inch of 5×7 in. Above 300 DPI the picture is reduced to 300 DPI; below it, PixelFit has to enlarge the crop and fine detail softens.

5×7 in in pixels at each print resolution

Pixels = inches × DPI. The panel uses 300 DPI unless you change it; the file sizes are for a detailed outdoor photo saved as JPEG.

How large is a 5×7 in file?

Saved at 300 DPI (1500×2100 px), a detailed outdoor photo of 5×7 in comes to about 591 KB at JPEG quality 60, 778 KB at 75 and 1.22 MB at 90, and about 675 KB as WebP at 75. Dropping to 200 DPI (1000×1400 px) brings quality 75 down to about 358 KB, but the print then holds fewer pixels per inch.

At 300 DPI the photo does not fit under 200 KB even at quality 30; it fits under 500 KB up to quality 46 and under 1 MB up to quality 84; under 2 MB it fits even at quality 95. Set the KB limit next to the size and PixelFit picks the highest quality that fits.

Other 5:7 print and photo sizes

These sizes have the same 5:7 shape as 5×7 in, so a photo cropped for one fits the others with no further crop.

How to resize a picture to 5×7 in

  1. Add the picture

Drop, paste or pick the photo in the PixelFit panel at the top of this page; it is decoded in your browser and never uploaded.

  2. Set the size

Pick inch as the unit, enter 5×7 in and 300 DPI; the tool turns that into 1500×2100 pixels.

  3. Choose how it fits

Choose crop to fill to keep the 5:7 frame without stretching (a phone photo loses 46.4%, left and right cut). Fit inside keeps the whole picture as a 1500×1125 file instead; Pad with colour puts that on a full 1500×2100 canvas.

  4. Pick the format and download

Keep JPG (without a KB limit PixelFit saves at quality 85, about 1 MB for a detailed outdoor photo) so the 300 DPI stamp travels with the file, or choose PDF to get the picture as a PDF page, then download.

Frequently asked questions

How do I resize a photo to 5×7 in?

Open the photo in the PixelFit panel on this page, set 5×7 in at 300 DPI (1500 × 2100 px), choose crop to fill and download. From a 12 MP phone photo that crops 46.4% (left and right cut) and still leaves 432 pixels per inch to work with.

How many pixels is 5×7 in?

5×7 in is 1500×2100 px at 300 DPI, 3000×4200 px at 600 DPI and 750×1050 px at 150 DPI (pixels = inches × DPI).

What DPI should a 5×7 in photo have?

PixelFit uses 300 DPI, which makes 5×7 in exactly 1500×2100 px; print it at 100% scale. At 150 DPI the same 1500×2100 pixels would print 10×14 in, twice as large and with half the density.

How many 5×7 in photos fit on one sheet?

Without margins, 2 fit on A4 (210×297 mm), 2 on US Letter, turning them sideways where that packs more. Leave a few millimetres for cutting.

How big is a 5×7 in JPEG at 300 DPI?

For a detailed outdoor photo about 778 KB at quality 75 (591 KB at 60, 1.22 MB at 90, 1 MB at the panel's default quality 85); a head-and-shoulders portrait is about 259 KB at quality 75, estimated from measured encodes of real sample photos at 1500×2100 px.
