Resize an image to 4000×4000 pixels

To resize an image to 4000×4000 px, enter 4000 × 4000 px and pick crop to fill so the 1:1 frame is not stretched: a 4:3 phone photo loses 25% of its area (a centred 3024×3024 crop). The result has 16 megapixels; as a JPEG, a detailed outdoor photo is about 4.26 MB at the panel's default quality 85 (3.23 MB at quality 75, extrapolated).

What 4000×4000 means in pixels

4000×4000 is a square, 4000 pixels on each side, 16,000,000 pixels in total (16 megapixels). Its sides reduce to 1:1 (1 as a decimal), so any picture cropped to 1:1 scales to it without distortion.

After the crop to fill a 12 MP phone photo (4032×3024) must be enlarged 1.323× to reach 4000×4000, which holds 1.3 times its pixels: no new detail appears, edges only get softer. Shown 1:1 it fills 4000×4000 CSS px on a standard screen and 2000×2000 CSS px on a 2× (Retina-class) screen; at 72 DPI the same pixels span 55.6×55.6 inches.

Decoded for editing it occupies 61 MB of memory (4 bytes per pixel); uncompressed 24-bit RGB would be 45.8 MB, which is why the downloadable JPEG, PNG or WebP is far smaller.

Getting 4000×4000 from a phone, camera or screenshot

Filling 4000×4000 from a 12 MP phone photo (4032×3024, 4:3) loses the least (25%); a vertical phone video frame (1080×1920, 9:16) loses the most (43.8%). "Fit inside" keeps the whole picture instead and the file comes out at the size in the last column; "Pad with colour" adds bars to reach the full 4000×4000.

12 MP phone photo (4032×3024, 4:3) 3024×3024 (left and right cut) 25% 1.323× (enlarged) 4000×3000
24 MP camera photo (6000×4000, 3:2) 4000×4000 (left and right cut) 33.3% 1× (as is) 4000×2667
Full HD screenshot (1920×1080, 16:9) 1080×1080 (left and right cut) 43.8% 3.704× (enlarged) 4000×2250

When 4000×4000 means enlarging

After the crop to fill, the kept region has to be enlarged 1.323× from a 12 MP phone photo, 3.704× from a Full HD screenshot and 3.704× from a vertical phone video frame. Enlarging adds pixels but no detail, so start from the largest original you have, or choose a smaller target if the destination allows it: 11×14 inch print or 4000×3000 landscape would need less stretching.

How many KB is a 4000×4000 image?

Estimated from encodes of real sample images measured with sharp 0.35.5 / libvips 8.18.7 on 31 October 2026, interpolated to 16,000,000 pixels; this size lies outside the measured range, so the figures are extrapolated. The outdoor photo at 4000×4000 is about 3.23 MB at quality 75 and a scanned page about 1.21 MB; your file will differ with detail and noise.

How to resize a picture to 4000×4000

  1. Add the picture

Drop, paste or pick the photo in the PixelFit panel at the top of this page; it is decoded in your browser and never uploaded.

  2. Set the size

Enter 4000 as the width and 4000 as the height in pixels (the panel is already set to 4000×4000).

  3. Choose how it fits

Choose crop to fill to keep the 1:1 frame without stretching (a phone photo loses 25%, left and right cut). Fit inside keeps the whole picture as a 4000×3000 file instead; Pad with colour puts that on a full 4000×4000 canvas.

  4. Pick the format and download

Choose JPG or WebP; without a KB limit PixelFit saves JPG at quality 85, about 4.26 MB for a detailed outdoor photo. Add a KB limit if the upload has one or the file should be smaller, then download the 4000x4000 file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I resize an image to 4000x4000?

Open the image in the PixelFit panel on this page, set 4000 × 4000 px, choose crop to fill so nothing is stretched and download. From a 12 MP phone photo that crops 25% (left and right cut) and scales the rest by 1.323×.

What aspect ratio is 4000x4000?

4000x4000 has an aspect ratio of 1:1: square, width ÷ height = 1. Sizes with the same ratio include 3000×3000 square, 2048×2048 square and 2000×2000 square.

Is 4000x4000 good for print?

At 300 DPI 4000x4000 prints 13.33×13.33 in (33.9×33.9 cm), enough for a print of that size at full density. At 150 DPI it stretches to 26.67×26.67 in.

How big is a 4000x4000 JPEG file?

For a detailed outdoor photo about 3.23 MB at quality 75 (2.47 MB at 60, 5.31 MB at 90, 4.26 MB at the panel's default quality 85); a head-and-shoulders portrait is about 1.16 MB at quality 75, extrapolated from encodes of real sample photos measured up to 6.75 MP (4000×4000 px lies outside that range). A flat graphic is smaller, a noisy low-light photo larger.
