What the India e-Visa KB limits mean in bytes

The India e-Visa photo range of 10 KB–1 MB is 10,240 to 1,000,000 bytes if you want a file that passes whether the portal counts a KB as 1,000 or 1,024 bytes and an MB as 1,000,000 or 1,048,576 bytes: a window of 989,760 bytes to aim for.

The India e-Visa passport bio page scan range of 10 KB–300 KB is 10,240 to 300,000 bytes if you want a file that passes whether the portal counts 1,000 or 1,024 bytes per KB: a window of 289,760 bytes to aim for.

Largest India e-Visa photo under 1 MB

The India e-Visa source gives a file-size limit but no pixel size for the photo. Measured on a public-domain portrait, a 1:1 JPG at quality 85 stays under 1 MB up to about 2,920 × 2,920 px (976 KB), so any common camera photo has to be scaled down before it fits.
