GATE photo and signature size

The GATE form takes a photo of 200 × 260 to 530 × 690 px, 5 KB–600 KB and a signature of 250 × 80 to 580 × 180 px, 3 KB–300 KB, both as JPG/JPEG.

GATE photo

JPG · 5-600 KB (5,120-600,000 bytes) · 200x260 px · white background

PixelFit aims between 5,120 and 600,000 bytes, so the file passes whether the form counts 1 KB as 1,000 or 1,024 bytes.

Pick a photo to fit it to 5-600 KB (5,120-600,000 bytes).

The result appears here: the exact byte count, pixel size and quality, the size before and after, a preview and a download button.

GATE upload specifications

Values for the GATE 2026 application (GOAPS), copied from GATE 2026 Photograph & Signature, IIT Guwahati, checked 31 October 2026; "not stated" means the source gives no figure for it.

UploadPixel sizePrint sizeFile sizeFormatBackground
Photo 200 × 260 to 530 × 690 px not stated 5 KB–600 KB JPG/JPEG white, no other objects or persons
Signature 250 × 80 to 580 × 180 px not stated 3 KB–300 KB JPG/JPEG not stated

GATE sizes in pixels and millimetres

Print sizes become pixels at a resolution (pixels = mm ÷ 25.4 × DPI); pixel sizes become print sizes the other way round. Computed for the GATE uploads at 200 and 300 DPI.

UploadAspect ratioMegapixelsAt 200 DPIAt 300 DPI

What the GATE KB limits mean in bytes

The GATE photo range of 5 KB–600 KB is 5,120 to 600,000 bytes if you want a file that passes whether the portal counts 1,000 or 1,024 bytes per KB: a window of 594,880 bytes to aim for.

The GATE signature range of 3 KB–300 KB is 3,072 to 300,000 bytes if you want a file that passes whether the portal counts 1,000 or 1,024 bytes per KB: a window of 296,928 bytes to aim for.

Estimated JPG file size for GATE uploads

Estimated from sizes measured with sharp 0.35.5 / libvips 8.18.7 on public-domain sample images (31 October 2026), interpolated to each target size. Your own scan can land 30-50% either side, which is why the tool measures the real file.

UploadPixel size usedQuality 60Quality 75Quality 85Quality 95Limit
Photo 200 × 260 px 8.8 KB 11.2 KB 14.4 KB 24.1 KB 5 KB–600 KB
Signature 250 × 80 px 1.6 KB 2.2 KB 3.1 KB 5.8 KB 3 KB–300 KB

Will the GATE photo fit the limit?

For the GATE photo at 200 × 260 px, even quality 95, the highest setting estimated here, stays under 600 KB at about 24.1 KB, and quality 85 (14.4 KB) clears the 5 KB minimum.

For the GATE signature at 250 × 80 px, even quality 95, the highest setting estimated here, stays under 300 KB at about 5.8 KB, and quality 85 (3.1 KB) clears the 3 KB minimum.

GATE rejection checklist

Upload checks computed from the GATE specification; a file that fails any one of them is usually refused at upload or flagged later.

  • Photo: File type is JPG/JPEG (a PNG or HEIC renamed to .jpg is still rejected).
  • Photo: The GATE photo file is no larger than 600 KB (600,000 bytes is safe under both KB definitions).
  • Photo: The GATE photo file is at least 5 KB (5,120 bytes or more); files under the minimum are rejected even when they look sharp.
  • Photo: Pixel size is 200 × 260 to 530 × 690 px (the smallest and largest sizes accepted; the shape rule below also applies).
  • Photo: Width ÷ height is between 0.66 and 0.89; a size inside the pixel range with another shape is rejected.
  • Photo: Background: white, no other objects or persons.
  • Signature: File type is JPG/JPEG (a PNG or HEIC renamed to .jpg is still rejected).
  • Signature: The GATE signature file is no larger than 300 KB (300,000 bytes is safe under both KB definitions).
  • Signature: The GATE signature file is at least 3 KB (3,072 bytes or more); files under the minimum are rejected even when they look sharp.
  • Signature: Pixel size is 250 × 80 to 580 × 180 px (the smallest and largest sizes accepted; the shape rule below also applies).
  • Signature: Width ÷ height is between 2.75 and 3.75; a size inside the pixel range with another shape is rejected.

How to resize your photo for GATE

  1. Take or scan the photo

Use a recent photo (background: white, no other objects or persons).

  2. Load the preset

Drop the file into the tool at the top of this page. The "GATE photo" preset is already set to 200 × 260 px (the form accepts 200 × 260 to 530 × 690 px) and 5 KB–600 KB, as JPG/JPEG.

  3. Check the result

Read the before and after sizes: the GATE photo must end between 5,120 and 600,000 bytes. If it ends under 5 KB, open "Fit, background and padding" and tick the option to pad a file that ends up below the minimum. Download it.

  4. Switch to the signature

Pick the "GATE signature" preset, set to 250 × 80 px (the form accepts 250 × 80 to 580 × 180 px) and 3 KB–300 KB as JPG/JPEG, and repeat with the signature file. If it ends under 3 KB, open "Fit, background and padding" and tick the option to pad a file that ends up below the minimum.

  5. Upload and preview

Upload the files on the GATE form and check the preview before you submit; verify the figures with the official notice first.

What the GATE source also says

  • Photo: Aspect ratio (width/height) between 0.66 and 0.89.
  • Photo: After cropping, the face covers 60-70% of the image.
  • Signature: Height to width 1 : R with R between 2.75 and 3.75.
  • Signature: The signature covers 70-80% of the cropped image.

GATE compared with similar forms

Of these 5 forms, the GATE photo limit of 600 KB is the most generous; a file made for a stricter form usually passes a more generous one only if it also meets the minimum and the pixel size.
