Resize an image to 800×1200 pixels

To resize an image to 800×1200 px, enter 800 × 1200 px and pick crop to fill so the 2:3 frame is not stretched: a 4:3 phone photo loses 50% of its area (a centred 2016×3024 crop). The result has 0.96 megapixels; as a JPEG, a detailed outdoor photo is about 325 KB at the panel's default quality 85 (246 KB at quality 75).

What 800×1200 means in pixels

800×1200 is a portrait frame, 1.5 times as tall as it is wide, 960,000 pixels in total (0.96 megapixels). Its sides reduce to 2:3 (0.6667 as a decimal), so any picture cropped to 2:3 scales to it without distortion.

A 12 MP phone photo has 13 times as many pixels, so reaching 800×1200 is a clean reduction with no invented detail. Shown 1:1 it fills 800×1200 CSS px on a standard screen and 400×600 CSS px on a 2× (Retina-class) screen; at 72 DPI the same pixels span 11.1×16.7 inches.

Decoded for editing it occupies 3.66 MB of memory (4 bytes per pixel); uncompressed 24-bit RGB would be 2.75 MB, which is why the downloadable JPEG, PNG or WebP is far smaller.

Getting 800×1200 from a phone, camera or screenshot

Filling 800×1200 from a vertical phone video frame (1080×1920, 9:16) loses the least (15.6%); a Full HD screenshot (1920×1080, 16:9) loses the most (62.5%). "Fit inside" keeps the whole picture instead and the file comes out at the size in the last column; "Pad with colour" adds bars to reach the full 800×1200. From the phone photo PixelFit takes the 2016×3024 crop through 1008×1512 before the last step to 800×1200, so each pass blends neighbouring pixels instead of skipping them.

Starting imageCrop to fill keepsArea lostScaleFit inside gives
12 MP phone photo (4032×3024, 4:3) 2016×3024 (left and right cut) 50% 0.397× (reduced) 800×600
24 MP camera photo (6000×4000, 3:2) 2667×4000 (left and right cut) 55.6% 0.3× (reduced) 800×533
Full HD screenshot (1920×1080, 16:9) 720×1080 (left and right cut) 62.5% 1.111× (enlarged) 800×450
Vertical phone video frame (1080×1920, 9:16) 1080×1620 (top and bottom cut) 15.6% 0.741× (reduced) 675×1200

When 800×1200 means enlarging

After the crop to fill, the kept region has to be enlarged 1.111× from a Full HD screenshot. Enlarging adds pixels but no detail, so start from the largest original you have, or choose a smaller target if the destination allows it: 720×1280 vertical HD or 768×1024 portrait would need less stretching.

How many KB is an 800×1200 image?

Estimated from encodes of real sample images measured with sharp 0.35.5 / libvips 8.18.7 on 31 October 2026, interpolated to 960,000 pixels. The outdoor photo at 800×1200 is about 246 KB at quality 75 and a scanned page about 134 KB; your file will differ with detail and noise.

How to resize a picture to 800×1200

  1. Add the picture

Drop, paste or pick the photo in the PixelFit panel at the top of this page; it is decoded in your browser and never uploaded.

  2. Set the size

Enter 800 as the width and 1200 as the height in pixels (the panel is already set to 800×1200).

  3. Choose how it fits

Choose crop to fill to keep the 2:3 frame without stretching (a phone photo loses 50%, left and right cut). Fit inside keeps the whole picture as an 800×600 file instead; Pad with colour puts that on a full 800×1200 canvas.

  4. Pick the format and download

Choose JPG or WebP; without a KB limit PixelFit saves JPG at quality 85, about 325 KB for a detailed outdoor photo. Add a KB limit if the upload has one or the file should be smaller, then download the 800x1200 file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I resize an image to 800x1200?

Open the image in the PixelFit panel on this page, set 800 × 1200 px, choose crop to fill so nothing is stretched and download. From a 12 MP phone photo that crops 50% (left and right cut) and scales the rest by 0.397×.

What aspect ratio is 800x1200?

800x1200 has an aspect ratio of 2:3: portrait, width ÷ height = 0.6667. Sizes with the same ratio include 1000×1500 portrait, 400×600 portrait and 2×3 inch print.

Is 800x1200 good for print?

At 300 DPI 800x1200 prints 2.67×4 in (6.8×10.2 cm), enough for a print of that size at full density. At 150 DPI it stretches to 5.33×8 in.

How big is an 800x1200 JPEG file?

For a detailed outdoor photo about 246 KB at quality 75 (185 KB at 60, 394 KB at 90, 325 KB at the panel's default quality 85); a head-and-shoulders portrait is about 96.4 KB at quality 75, estimated from measured encodes. A flat graphic is smaller, a noisy low-light photo larger.

How does 800x1200 look on a high-density screen?

On a 2× screen 800x1200 is sharp when shown at 400×600 CSS px; shown larger, the browser enlarges it. A slot of 800×1200 CSS px on a 2× screen needs a 1600×2400 file.
