Resize an image to 420×540 pixels
To resize an image to 420×540 px, enter 420 × 540 px and pick crop to fill so the 7:9 frame is not stretched: a 4:3 phone photo loses 41.7% of its area (a centred 2352×3024 crop). The result has 0.23 megapixels; as a JPEG, a head-and-shoulders portrait is about 42.3 KB at the panel's default quality 85 (32 KB at quality 75).

What 420×540 means in pixels
420×540 is a portrait frame, 1.29 times as tall as it is wide, 226,800 pixels in total (0.23 megapixels). Its sides reduce to 7:9 (0.7778 as a decimal), so any picture cropped to 7:9 scales to it without distortion.
A 12 MP phone photo has 54 times as many pixels, so reaching 420×540 is a clean reduction with no invented detail. Shown 1:1 it fills 420×540 CSS px on a standard screen and 210×270 CSS px on a 2× (Retina-class) screen; at 72 DPI the same pixels span 5.8×7.5 inches.
Decoded for editing it occupies 886 KB of memory (4 bytes per pixel); uncompressed 24-bit RGB would be 664 KB, which is why the downloadable JPEG, PNG or WebP is far smaller.
Where 420×540 is asked for
Each line comes from the official notice listed under Sources, checked October 2026. Rules change: verify with the notice before you submit.
- Canada IEC photo: at least 420 × 540 px. The file must be at least 60 KB.
- Canada G5 sponsorship photo: at least 420 × 540 px. The file may be up to 4 MB.
Getting 420×540 from a phone, camera or screenshot
Filling 420×540 from a vertical phone video frame (1080×1920, 9:16) loses the least (27.7%); a Full HD screenshot (1920×1080, 16:9) loses the most (56.3%). "Fit inside" keeps the whole picture instead and the file comes out at the size in the last column; "Pad with colour" adds bars to reach the full 420×540. From the phone photo PixelFit takes the 2352×3024 crop through 1176×1512 and 588×756 before the last step to 420×540, so each pass blends neighbouring pixels instead of skipping them.
| Starting image | Crop to fill keeps | Area lost | Scale | Fit inside gives |

| 12 MP phone photo (4032×3024, 4:3) | 2352×3024 (left and right cut) | 41.7% | 0.179× (reduced) | 420×315 |
| 24 MP camera photo (6000×4000, 3:2) | 3111×4000 (left and right cut) | 48.2% | 0.135× (reduced) | 420×280 |
| Full HD screenshot (1920×1080, 16:9) | 840×1080 (left and right cut) | 56.3% | 0.5× (reduced) | 420×236 |
| Vertical phone video frame (1080×1920, 9:16) | 1080×1389 (top and bottom cut) | 27.7% | 0.389× (reduced) | 304×540 |
How many KB is a 420×540 image?
Estimated from encodes of real sample images measured with sharp 0.35.5 / libvips 8.18.7 on 31 October 2026, interpolated to 226,800 pixels. A head-and-shoulders portrait at 420×540 is about 32 KB at quality 75 and a scanned page about 38.2 KB; your file will differ with detail and noise.

Will a 420×540 photo fit an upload limit?
The highest JPEG or WebP quality that stays under each limit at exactly 420×540 px, from the same measurements. Set the KB limit next to the pixel size and PixelFit runs this search on your own photo. For the 60 KB minimum in the notice above, a portrait at 420×540 only gets there at about quality 95; a plainer photo may fall short, so keep the panel's padding option: it adds an invisible JPEG comment block to reach the minimum without changing the picture.

How to resize a picture to 420×540
-
Add the picture
Drop, paste or pick the photo in the PixelFit panel at the top of this page; it is decoded in your browser and never uploaded.
-
Set the size
Enter 420 as the width and 540 as the height in pixels (the panel is already set to 420×540).
-
Choose how it fits
Choose crop to fill to keep the 7:9 frame without stretching (a phone photo loses 41.7%, left and right cut). Fit inside keeps the whole picture as a 420×315 file instead; Pad with colour puts that on a full 420×540 canvas.
-
Pick the format and download
Choose JPG or WebP; without a KB limit PixelFit saves JPG at quality 85, about 42.3 KB for a head-and-shoulders portrait. Add a KB limit if the upload has one or the file should be smaller, then download the 420x540 file.

Frequently asked questions
How do I resize an image to 420x540?
Open the image in the PixelFit panel on this page, set 420 × 540 px, choose crop to fill so nothing is stretched and download. From a 12 MP phone photo that crops 41.7% (left and right cut) and scales the rest by 0.179×.
What aspect ratio is 420x540?
420x540 has an aspect ratio of 7:9: portrait, width ÷ height = 0.7778. Sizes with the same ratio include 630×810 px photo and 35×45 mm passport photo.
Is 420x540 good for print?
At 300 DPI 420x540 prints 1.4×1.8 in (3.6×4.6 cm), smaller than a passport photo, so it is a screen size rather than a print size. At 150 DPI it stretches to 2.8×3.6 in.
How big is a 420x540 JPEG file?
For a head-and-shoulders portrait about 32 KB at quality 75 (25 KB at 60, 52.4 KB at 90, 42.3 KB at the panel's default quality 85); a detailed outdoor photo is about 57.1 KB at quality 75, estimated from measured encodes. A flat graphic is smaller, a noisy low-light photo larger.
How does 420x540 look on a high-density screen?
On a 2× screen 420x540 is sharp when shown at 210×270 CSS px; shown larger, the browser enlarges it. A slot of 420×540 CSS px on a 2× screen needs an 840×1080 file.
